Louis Theroux's latest documentary on Sunday, in which he visited the church four years after he made his first film about them, not only brought light to the fact that people are begining to defect from the church, but brought attention to their bizarre quasi-adoption of Lady Gaga by using her songs to promote their agenda. An example of what I mean can be seen in their take on ‘Telephone’, which is actually a lot smuttier than the original. Whereas the Gaga simply sung about a telephone, Phelps and friends sing about how Lady Gaga is evil because of her music and dancing, with no hint of irony that they’re contradicting themselves by doing exactly the same thing. Unless, I don't know, they claim that Ezekiel 23:19-20 allows only them to bump and grind. Or something. What's even more bizarre is that their version can now be found on iTunes!

Although Lady Gaga has the right to sue the chastity belts off these people, perhaps her approach of simply ignoring the Westboro Baptists should be used more often when dealing with these guys. The Phelps essentially thrive on attention and publicity, (yes, writing this and drawing the cartoon doesn't really help) and will do anything to get more of it. Take last year’s incident of Burn a Koran Day, when the world and his wife spent weeks waiting to see if Pastor Terry Jones and his church would carry out their day-long festivity of burning copies of the Koran and a feast of buffalo wings. The Phelps family got all jealous and upset that no one was giving them any attention, especially when they claimed that they did the whole Koran burning thing years ago, and accussed the media of ignoring them on that occassion.

This was inspired by an article I read the other day, about how some people involved in the anti-cuts protests tomorrow are hoping to turn Trafalgar Square into Tahrir Square.

As much as I support most of the protests that will be happening tomorrow (I really wish the anarchists would fuck off, tbh), could people please stop comparing them to the ongoing protests in the Middle East? Cuts to services and job loses that have happened in the past year isn't really the same as living under a brutal dictatorship for several decades.

I am really obssessed with Rastamouse at the moment, even though it's only been on for a week and is on Cbeebies. If you haven't checked it out yet, I recommend it. Possibly the greatest thing the BBC have ever produced!

The Mail haven't vented outrage on Rastamouse yet, but it's a shitstorm waiting to happen, seeing as the airing of the show combines the Mail's hatred towards multiculturalism, the BBC and its apparent 'left-wing agenda' and children. The people of netmums.com, however, are already up in arms about it and are convinced that a show about a crime-fighting Rastafari mouse is going to encourage kids across the land to smoke weed and speak in Jamaican patois.

Then again, I can see why they'd be concerned about children being influenced by the shows they watch. Afterall, my love of soup, habit of whistling and use of foul language can all be attributed to the Clangers.

Comic inspired by this article from the Guardian, where the writer claims that the hipster 'movement' has improved gay rights and made homosexuality socially acceptable.

In other news, this article from the Daily Mail has been shared and spread around all over the Internet since Sunday. In true Mail style, the article raises concern and exaggerates on a non-issue and combines it with their stance towards homosexuals. In the last couple of weeks, the Mail have reported on stories such as the persecution of Christian B&B owners by homosexuals, how said homosexuals are as bad as Nazis, how This Morning is turning into a daytime gay porn show, and that Britain's squash teams are becoming lesbianised.

Now, the Daily Mail makes out that kids "as young as FOUR" are to be taught on how to become homosexuals. Although this is something that would make the likes of Helen Lovejoy have a heart-attack, these are merely proposals. The idea is that children are not "taught about" gay people at all, but rather their existance is just casually acknowledged in any lessons in which people in general are refered to, such as in Maths lessons ("Jane and Elizabeth go on a date..."), or in science lessons where children would be taught evidence of homosexuality in certain animals such as penguins or fruit flies. As usual, it had Mail readers frothing in the mouth, with the usual criticism of political correctness gone mad and using somewhat homoerotic language when claiming that the gays are "ramming their agenda down our throats".

It also didn't stop the likes of Melanie Phillips from sharing her outrage on this "gay curriculum" in her column. Such proposals, Phillips argues, would be brainwashing children, and is tantamount to child abuse. She also goes on to suggest that homosexuals fighting for equality are equivalent to McCathyites, seeking to make homosexuality "mandatory". Despite this, and the fact she has a paranoid belief that the "gay agenda" is controlling the country and seeking to sacrifice freedom of speech for tolerance, it didn't stop her from writing such nasty bile in a newspaper which has the second-largest circulation in the country.

Happy belated New Year everyone! It's been a while, but I hope y'all doing well. And yes, I failed to produce a new Lilith and Steve strip last month. But in my defense, I've been really busy lately with my final year at uni getting a degree and all! I decided to put that comic on hiatus for the time being (well, techincally it has been since August), but I've made it my New Year's resolution to try and update this blog at least a couple of times a month before I (hopefully) graduate in July and spend the next few years of my life on the dole!

Speaking of which, here's a new comic! Now in shiny widescreen format!

So a couple of months, I started doing a new comic called Lilith and Steve, which stopped abruptly at part 6. This was because of so many reasons; some of which include my laptop breaking down (and having to wait several weeks for a new replacement...which truned out to be my old one but with a new hardrive), I joined a Maori haka troupe and was getting everything ready and prepared for my final year at uni. Fast approaching my quater-life crisis and soon to face the realities of graduation and life outside acedemia, I've resorted to drowning out my sorrows with a mixture of Swedish cider, the Asterix comics and Stictly Come Dancing - Ann Widdecombe on that show is both the most hilarious and most disturbing thing I have ever seen on televison.

Anyhoo, new comic! Sadly not the next installment of Lilith and Steve (which will continue next month), but it's something which I did for the first edition of Ellipsis, Liverpool University's new student magazine.

Sorry for the lack of posts this past month, I've been busy with exams, essays and being in a play. I've already drawn a few strips in regards to the election two weeks ago, but I'll post them up once I find them (seriously, my desk is in such a state that I need to call in a team of archaeologists).

Anwyay, in the mean time, here is my contribution to Everybody Draw Mohammed Day...

I decided to draw this, to reflect Muhammad's love for cats. I didn't do this not to avoid offending anyone if I did draw something which criticised Muhammad or Islam (my original idea was to have him in a burqa, but a French newspaper done that years ago), but to see what reaction I would get (if any) if I portrayed Muhammad in a positive light. Already, I would have offended some for simply portraying the Prophet (which has been considered a taboo in Islam only since the 16th Century), but it would be interesting to see what reaction I would get if anybody saw this. Especially if it's something that looks as if it's been drawn by a child!

Indecision 2010 - Parliament's Out!

This election will be the third time I have used my right to vote, the last two being the 2009 European election and the 2008 London Mayor election. This is my first General Election. Whereas the last two elections gave me a sense of excitement, and I have found General Elections pretty thrilling since I was 11 (I had a very deprived childhood), this year I have been feeling the opposite.

Why is this so? It's because I hate the FPTP system. Not just because the polls increasingly suggest that we are heading for a hung parliament led by Labour, even if they don't win the most votes. Liverpool Riverside, the constituency I live at during term time, is one of the safest Labour seats in the country. According to VoterPower.org, a persons vote here is the equivalent of 0.018 votes and the average British voter has 14.29 times more voting power than those living in Liverpool Riverside. Since 1983, over 75% of votes in the constituency have gone to Labour.

However, if I decided to do a postal vote and vote in my family's constituency, the newly created Ruislip-Northwood-Pinner, I'd be voting in a Tory seat as was the case before my constituency changed its name and size from the former seat of Ruislip-Northwood. I couldn't get figures for the current constituency, seeing as it was officially created today, but I do know that the former Ruislip-Northwood had always been blue.

I am aware that under the FPTP system, it is the swing seats that decides on the outcome of elections. Even so, this sytsem has made me feel really apathetic all of a sudden. And I just know that any attempt to reform the voting system will never happen under the Conservatives or Labour; why bite the hand that feeds you?

Indecision 2010 - Soundbites

I know Cameron's calls to establish a "volutnary youth scheme" (something which Labour have pledged in the past) is nothing more than a soundbite to attract any potential and actual Tory voters from the "Bring Back National Service" group. However, if such a scheme is so helpful to my generation and the younger generations, wouldn't the money, time and effort wasted on this half baked youth scheme gimmick would surely be better spent improving our failing education system?

And I apologise to reference Marina Hyde twice in one week, but her article in regards to the leaders wives and how many have annoyingly proclaimed this year to be the "WAG Election" is worth a read.

Indecision 2010 - Gene Hunt

During the weekend, Labour released a new poster featuring David Cameron in the guise of Gene Hunt to remind voters of Tory governance during the 1980s. At first glance, the poster seems to appear to be something of a late Fools, especially as The Guardian reported on Labour's latest range of election posters as an April Fools prank. Alas, the poster is genuine, and was unveiled by the Miliband brothers . The poster is was designed by 25 year-old Quagliozzi, and was the winning entry of a competition Labour held to find a new poster in the election campaign as a way to save money. This poster was the best entry in the competition. Out of a thousand.

The release of this poster could potentially backfire for Labour in that the Tories could gain thousands of more votes. The Tories have taken advantage of the poster by re-releasing it with a diferent slogan. Intending to highlight not just how much damage the Tories did to many parts of the country during the 1980s, but the political incorrectness of society at the time, Labour have gone and used a cult character that is highly popular with the public. Especially one that is considered an unlikely sex symbol. Not only has he gone and referenced a fictional character that is seen as a lovable rouge to fans of Life On Mars and Ashes to Ashes, but it also alienates those that do not watch those shows. It gives the impression that there are too many trendy assumptions at work here, that we all follow the 'cool' shows but don't have enough common sense. Those people would be unaware of the references Labour are trying to make in the poster; to them the poster gives the appearance that David Cameron looks cool. Not good, especially when many cultural aspects of the 1980s are currently in vogue.

This poster also highlights the childish name-calling that politicians have always resorted to in order to influence the simple minded. Why give the electorate a clear manifesto covering specific issues, answer questions without blathering like an idiot and be clear about ones ideology and views on the role of Government, when slinging mud at your opponents is much easier? Election campaigns always revolve around ridiculous PR stunts and advertising, as opposed to a serious examination of the current governments record or the main parties' policies.

Also, from a copyright infringement perspective, have Labour gotten permission by the BBC?

Indecision 2010 - The Party for Change?

Since David Cameron became Conservative leader in 2005, he sought to move the party in a new direction after the party suffered electoral defeats since 1997. After the success of Barack Obama's presidential campaign in 2008, which focused on the idea of hope and change, the Conservatives have adopted the change mantra as the their own and constantly bleat it out in interviews or at any given opportunity. The decision to adopt progressiveness is as laughable as it is oxymornic, seeing as this is being done by the Conservative Party (its also something I have poked fun at in the past).

If the Conservatives are the party for change, and despite claiming they are "the party of socail mobility", then why is it that the current Shadow Cabinet are dominated by former members of the Bullingdon Club and the richest politicians in Britain?

If the Conservatives are the party for change, then for what reason did they protest against the so-called "death tax" other than to protect the interests of the rich? If Cameron claims that he isn't a Thatcherite and has promised to impose tough regulations on the financial sector, then why is he wooing the City for donations (which account for a third of party funding) and stated in a recent speech to Goldman Sachs, Barclays and other leaders of the world's most powerful banks that the City was in his blood?

If the Conservatives are the party for change, then why is it that many members of the party retain the homophobic attitudes that are typical of the Tories? Although he claims to regret supporting Section 28, why did David Cameron pussy-foot around this and other gay issues in the recent interview with the Gay Times, and is silent over Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling's recent comments on supporting B&Bs banning gay couples?

If the Conservatives are the party for change because they have moved away from the days where they endorsed bigotry and discrimination, then why is it that in the European Parliament, they not long ago aligned themselves with far-right parties? Why did many members of the party recently try to prevent a black candidate from standing in the Tory safe seat of East Surrey?

Despite David Cameron trying (and failing) to give the impression that him and the party are moving towards a more eco-friendly direction and that this was evidence that the party has changed, why is it that the majority of Tory MPs think otherwise? Have environmental issues become the "New Europe"?

The reformed and progressive facade which the Tories have adopted since Cameron came to power has slowly crumbled away these past few weeks. Labour recently released a poster which depicts David Cameron as Gene Hunt, to remind voters of the perils of Tory governance during the 1980s. Although the poster could potentially backfire, and is an insult to Gene Hunt (something which I will draw/write about later in the week), how true is it that the Conservative Party of 2010 really is the same as the Conservative Party of the 1980s?

So I've been busy for the past three weeks because of two things: 1) Essays; including one where I had to completely rewrite the American Constitution. May sound fun, but I had to rewrite it in order to improve bureaucracy. It was sould-destroying; if I had my way, I would have made it into a secular, gun-free, gay-loving, evolution-supporting, liberal wet dream! 2) I'm in the university production of Arnold Wesker's 'The Kitchen', I have two roles which are a tramp and a Greek-Cypriot kitchen cleaner. Putting on the Greek accent is nightmare though (or any accent for that matter); when we started rehersals I sounded like an elderly Asian lady, but now it sounds like a Cockney-Ukranian. I'm getting there, I guess!

This will probably be my only post this week as I'm pretty occupied with writing essays at the moment.

I'm not kidding, Pope Benedict XVI recently cannonised Father Damien of Molokai as the saint of not just loners and the American state of Hawaii, but also as the patron saint of HIV and AIDS. I wonder which type of AIDS this saint represents, the good sort or the bad?

In related Vatican news, I really like the sound of this idea.

I'm glad that yesterday's airing of Question Time with Nick Griffin turned out to be a lot better than I thought it would be. I, like many of those that support freedom of speech supported the BBC's decision to allow Nick Griffin on the show, even though I despise the slimeball and his views. Of course, certain members of Parliament and the anti-facsists thought otherwise, especially Unite Aganist Fascism and their pathetic 'no platform' policy - they really need to look up "freedom of speech" before they go around trying to break into a television centre to stop a televised debate.

Despite supporting the BBC's decision to allow the BNP leader on the show, I expected this edition of Question Time to be a car-crash, and was concerned that even the audience would break out into a riot of some sort (what with the fact that the BBC confirmed that some members of the audience were BNP supporters), but luckly that wasn't the case. Instead of being the slick talker from previous appearances, Nick Griffin kept on stumbling over himself and was being shown up for the fascist that he is. Watching him squirm when the panel and David Dimbleby made mention of vile comments he has made in the past and him trying to deny that he ever made such comments was a pleasure. Not to mention the comments he made on the show, such as claiming the Ku Klux Klan are an "almost entriely non-violent" organisation. Did he really think he would get away with saying things like that on a television debate that was broadcast throughout the country?

A minor issue I have with last night's show was that Nick Griffin's views on homosexuality weren't directly addressed. Although the topic of civil partnership was mentioned in passing in the last ten minutes of the programme, when someone asked a question in regards to Jan Moir's homophobic article on Steven Gateley, I was suprised that none of the panel or even the audienced addressed his views. However, Griffin himself said on the show that he didn't like "militant homosexuals indoctrinating our children", so I guess that spoke volumes about the intelligence and views of this man towards the gay community. But still, I can't help but feel that he got off lightly with the homophobic comments he has made throughout his political career. Also, I really wish Ian Hislop was on the panel instead of Bonnie Greer, although I'm grateful that she was there to point out the absurdity of the term "indigenous Caucasian race" to Griffin.

Anyway, I'm gonna go and collect any spare pennies lying around my room to help chip in for a plane ticket to send Nick Griffin and his ilk to the South Pole. Anyone want to join me?
